Jennifer Helman, Policy and Engagement Manager with the Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC), joined us to speak about plastics, recycling, and the circular economy. Founded in 1974, RCBC is Canada’s longest-standing recycling council and provides practical information on waste reduction, reuse, and responsible recycling.
Jennifer explained that a circular economy is designed to keep materials in use for as long as possible, with reducing and reusing taking priority over recycling. She also discussed the growing concern around microplastics, which can come from synthetic clothing, vehicle tires, and the breakdown of larger plastic products, eventually making their way into waterways and the food chain.
Members also learned more about British Columbia’s recycling system, including Recycle BC and facilities such as Merlin Plastics in Delta. Jennifer encouraged everyone to use RCBC’s free Recyclepedia resource to find out how and where to recycle household items. More information is available at www.rcbc.ca or by calling 604-RECYCLE (604-732-9252).
