Guest Speaker – Mary Lou Steward, Mayor of Blaine
Mayor Mary Lou Steward spoke about Hands Across the Border, an initiative started by Canadian Heidi Landry, and reflected on the importance of the Canada–U.S. relationship.
Mayor Steward shared her own connection to Canada, where she grew up, before moving to the United States. She reflected on her 15 years of involvement with Blaine City Council and spoke candidly about her concerns regarding the current political climate in the United States, democracy, and changing relationships between Canada and the U.S. Her overall message emphasized maintaining connection across the border through “peace, love and a handshake.”
Club Announcements – September 22, 2026
Kristina Eng Nominated for District Governor
Kristina Eng shared that she is considering putting her name forward for District Governor for the 2029–2030 Rotary year. The Club Board has approved her moving forward, and members expressed their strong support.
Winston Conyers moved that the Rotary Club of White Rock support the nomination of Kristina Eng for District Governor for 2029–2030. Irene Dahl seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
If selected, Kristina will take part in District-funded training and shadowing opportunities in preparation for the role. She said she is honoured to be considered and hopes the opportunity will help encourage greater collaboration and membership growth among Rotary clubs.
Environment Committee
Peter provided an update on the Club’s efforts to raise awareness about plastics and their impact on the environment. A guest speaker will join us on October 20 to discuss the issue further and introduce members to Rotary International’s End Plastic Soup initiative.
Foundry Update
Kristina also shared encouraging progress on the Foundry project. Working together with the Semiahmoo Rotary Club, our Club has been granted a counselling room that will be known as the Rotary Counselling Room.
The two Rotary clubs will also be recognized on the Foundry wall as founding members of the resource centre for the duration of its anticipated 20-year lease.
Renovations are now underway on the three-level building. Once completed, the Foundry will bring mental health, physical health and other important services for youth together in one accessible location.
New Rotarians Get-Together
Kevin reported that approximately 20 people attended Friday’s potluck for newer Rotarians. The informal gathering provided a great opportunity for members to meet one another, socialize and learn more about Rotary and the Club.

Members are also encouraged to take home a food-drive bag, fill it with non-perishable food items and return it in support of the upcoming food drive.
Upcoming Events and Fundraisers
Miss Vicky 2027 Challenge – Support Lee and Winston’s global endurance ride and Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. Donations to the challenge will help unlock a $100,000 matching grant for the PolioPlus Program.
District 5050 Foundation Dinner – Nov. 07, 2026 - Join fellow Rotarians for an inspiring evening featuring guest speakers, a buffet dinner and a Peace Pole ceremony. Tickets are $83.50 CAD.
Kingha Coffee Fundraiser – Enjoy premium, ethically sourced Ugandan coffee for $24 per bag. Of each purchase, $9 will directly support youth mental health and wellness programs at Sources Foundry.
Rotary International Convention – June 26–30, 2027 – Rotary members from more than 140 countries will gather at the Fira de Barcelona for five days of keynote speakers, networking, cultural activities and opportunities to collaborate on Rotary service initiatives.
