Trevor Josephson, Executive Director of the Peace Arch Hospice Society (PAHS), joined us to discuss grief support in our community and introduce a meaningful initiative that could bring comfort to people experiencing loss.
Trevor is also a counsellor with an advanced diploma in art therapy. He works with children, youth, and adults, supporting individuals and families through grief and end-of-life experiences.
Supporting Individuals and Families Through Grief
The Peace Arch Hospice Society supports people in South Surrey and White Rock who are approaching the end of life, along with family members and friends experiencing anticipatory grief.
Its services are offered free of charge and include:
These services are made possible through the generosity of donors, community organizations, and supporters such as Rotary.
The Wind Phone Project: A Place to Remember and Reflect
Trevor introduced the idea of bringing a Wind Phone to White Rock and South Surrey, creating a peaceful place where people can feel connected to loved ones who have died.
The concept originated in Japan in 2010 and gained wider recognition following the devastating 2011 tsunami.
A wind phone is typically an old-fashioned telephone, often a rotary phone, placed in a quiet outdoor setting. Visitors can pick up the receiver, dial a number, and speak aloud to someone they miss. There is no one on the other end. Instead, the experience provides a private, judgment-free opportunity to express feelings, share memories, and navigate grief.
The project is built around a powerful idea: while death ends a life, it does not end a relationship. Maintaining a continuing bond with loved ones can be an important part of the grieving process.
A plaque would accompany the phone, explaining its purpose and welcoming anyone who needs a quiet moment of reflection.
Bringing a Wind Phone to White Rock
Trevor was surprised to learn that only three wind phones currently exist in the Lower Mainland and believes our community would benefit from having one.
He hopes to partner with the Rotary Club of White Rock to bring this initiative to life. Potential locations include Kwomais Point Park, Ruth Johnson Park, or Crescent Park, where a peaceful natural setting could provide a welcoming space for reflection.
The next steps include:
This is an opportunity to help create a lasting community resource where people can remember loved ones, express their grief, and find comfort and connection.
