Stephanie Beck shared the history of Peace Arch Hospital and the important role the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation continues to play in supporting healthcare in our community. Peace Arch Hospital opened in 1954 after local residents came together to raise the funds needed to build their own community hospital. That same spirit of community support continues today, with the Foundation funding medical equipment, capital projects and preventative health initiatives.
Stephanie highlighted several major projects now underway, including new operating suites, medical imaging equipment, the new Production Kitchen and the redevelopment of the hospital cafeteria into a community hub. The Production Kitchen is now 75% complete. Work is also progressing on a major redevelopment of the fourth floor into a modern ICU and Cardiac Monitoring Unit, featuring private rooms, bathrooms, natural light and more comfortable spaces for patients and families. Of the $35 million needed for the project, $17 million has already been raised.
The Foundation also supports nursing education, hospice programs, physician recruitment, medical equipment and preventative healthcare. One of the strongest results has been physician recruitment, with 25 new physicians joining Peace Arch Hospital over the past two years, helping protect important pediatric and maternity services. Stephanie also encouraged community members to get involved by volunteering, becoming an ambassador, making a donation or supporting events such as the returning Picnic on the Pier.
